The Challenge

Create a wide range of cocktails that play homage to Appian Capital’s mining heritage. And serve them at a central Mayfair restaurant to 80 guests as a pre-dinner bar service. Each drink was named after a mine and used liquor sourced local to each mine.

Our approach

The “Santa Rita” nickel mine is in Bahia Brazil, which is where we sourced the amazing Abelha Organic Cachaça Silver. They farm their own sugar cane to produce this full-flavoured artisanal Cachaça. Mixed with apple, lime and cinnamon sugar to create this wonderfully refreshing Caipirinha inspired drink. The “Gorno” zinc mine lies below the Southern Alps and we sourced a local limone Massarotti to pair with mint, lime and soda. The “Rosh Pinah” lead and zinc mine is in Southern Namibia. At £38 a bottle, the local Namrum rum is an extra special treat, made using the locally grown devil’s claw plant. We used it to make a ‘Dark and Stormy’ inspired black cherry and ginger flavoured drink to provide some sweetness with this spicy rum. The star in “Pine Point” is Strathcona vodka, which uses single grain hard red wheat grown close to this Canadian mine. We added coffee liqueur, cold brew coffee and marshmallow syrup with a toasted marshmallow garnish.
